I have no interest in the lives of Grand Theft Auto V 's three headliners Trevor, Franklin, and Michael. I believe it’s caused by the fact that there’s only one spotlight that has to bounce between three actors standing on distant parts of the stage. Rockstar seems to be keen on this too, shown by their “in medias res” display every time the player switches characters. Sure, it’s technologically impressive, and it allows the protagonists to appear more like characters that have lives outside of my puppeteering. However, when I am playing as Trevor, Franklin, or Michael, catching them in the middle of their day-to-day sometimes keys me in on how little I know about these people and their motivations.
